The Golden Monkey is a local subspecies of the widespread Sykes Monkey, also known as the “Blue Monkey” and is endemic to the high altitude forests of the Volcanoes National Park area. The monkeys are playful and inquisitive and often spend their time leaping from bamboo branches or frolicking on the forest floor. There are two habituated groups of Golden Monkey, one group comprises around 80 – 100 members and has its home at the foot of Mt Sabyinyo.
When you arrive in Kigali, we will pick you up and take you to Volcanoes National Park. You might be able to take a free city tour of Kigali, which includes stops at the Kimihurura market and the Kigali Genocide Museum, before departing for northern Rwanda, depending on the time of your departure from Kigali. We will travel for two hours from Kigali to Ruhengeri/Musanze and then stop at the Kinigi Iby’iwacu Cultural Experience, commonly known as the Gorilla Guardians Village. After that, we’ll have a narrated nature stroll around Volcanoes National Park.
In Volcanoes National Park, the day will begin with a hike among the golden monkeys. The high-altitude woods of the park are home to this primate. After witnessing their amusing interactions, we will leave the park and transfer to Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The transport will cross the Rwanda-Uganda border at Cyanika on the way to Bwindi National Park.
The third day is another for hiking into the forest in search of the unique local wildlife. After breakfast, you will go to the Bwindi National Park gate to receive a briefing on the gorilla walk. A lecture on the fundamentals of the gorilla walk will be given by the national park guide, who will also advise you on how to act so as to protect the safety of both visitors and the animals. Then you will start your tracking journey, moving through the tropical jungle until you come upon a family of mountain gorillas. Depending on how deep the gorillas are into the jungle, the normal gorilla hike can last between three and six hours.
We’ll leave for Queen Elizabeth National Park in the morning from Bwindi National Park. We will travel through the breathtaking scenery of western Uganda on the trip, and we will reach Queen Elizabeth National Park in the late afternoon. Driving through the Queen Elizabeth National Park’s Ishasha region, which is well-known for the tree-climbing lions, will be our first activity. The lions in Ishasha, in contrast to those at the Kasenyi plains, have discovered a method to climb the fig trees to take advantage of the warm weather. Ishasha is worth a stay even though seeing the tree-climbing lions isn’t always assured.
At the lodge, we’ll have breakfast early in the day to get the day started. After that, we’ll travel to Queen Elizabeth National Park’s renowned Kasenyi Plains to look for diverse wild animal species. The Kasenyi Plains are located in Queen Elizabeth National Park’s huge savannahs of the Albertine Rift. The morning will be jam-packed with excitement! Expect to see lions, buffalo herds, elephants, Uganda kobs, topi, and bushbucks among other animals. While seeing the “big five” in the park is not always possible, on a good day, you could see leopards, bringing the total to the “big four.” After returning to the resort for lunch and a little rest, we will board the Kazinga Channel boat excursion to observe wild animals for the remainder of the day.
On day six, the day begins with yet another early breakfast before heading to the Kalinzu Forest to track chimpanzees in their natural habitat. If you’re lucky, you could come across any of the other various types of monkeys in the jungle on your trip. These include red-tailed monkeys, baboons, and colobus monkeys. It’s time to head back to Kigali, Kampala, or Entebbe once we’ve completed our final trekking excursion, depending on the final location you’ve chosen.
